Gift Wrapping The Rocking Dog Way!

All Sewn Up, Rocking Dog

All Sewn Up

Another batch of gifts needed to be wrapped at the Rocking Dog Kennel. Alas no sticky tape was to be found… but no worries I dealt with the parcels in a jiffy!

Beloved Bernina, twine and glue gun sufficed in the midst of my no tape crisis. A bundle of delicious ribbons were wrapped for a very creative friend. I used a paper table mat snaffled from an alfresco eatery in Perugia. Testone serves the most delicious Torta outside the famous court room ( the Italian’s were not happy with the Amanda Knox verdict).  The eating place very obviously is a favourite hangout for students.  Torta are Umbrian flatbreads and they encase a variety of fillings, take your pick from Porchetta, Mozzarella, Prosciutto and a whole host of other Italian produce. Two generous slices of torta and two small beers whist sitting in glorious sunshine cost under £10. Apart from the food and the sun  I loved the tobacco coloured table mats, and now they are wrapping! Coarse twine, some woollen bobbles and an up-cycled label completed the package.

Beloved Bernina was bought into use to sew a parcel. I used some beautiful retro pages from a charity shop book and used zig zag stitch to create a bag. The gift item was neatly stashed and the final edge was sewn to create a giant ravioli . A label was then made and threaded with some jolly ribbon. I hope Beloved Bernina hasn’t felt too unhappy about sewing paper and card.

Lastly some rather bulky packages of spring bulbs were given the sack treatment. I chose some fabric from Material Mountain and whizzed up a bag with plant pot panel. Tied and labelled with an appropriate quote it was ready to give.

Who needs sticky tape?!

Unlike Elvis I Want To Go To Chelsea!

Favourite Garden, Rocking Dog

Favourite Garden

As the song went Elvis Costello didn’t want to go to Chelsea. But I SO want to be at Chelsea, specifically the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The sacrifices I make for my boy! So this year the gardens will have to just be sadly viewed on the television. It’s one occasion I would like smellevision!

Yesterday I took the opportunity to give my lists an overview in the garden. The sun was intoxicating and calming. In amongst very healthy looking weeds I spotted some gorgeous Chelsea Flower Show 2015 purchases. I ended up feeling so guilty that these lovely splashes of colour were being inhibited by shrouds of Ground Elder and the like. For a while now I have actually been talking to the garden saying “After the wedding…” . How lovely on Monday (well maybe not Monday, there’ll be be beds to change, china to put back in cupboards and the family to reinvigorate and rest in equal quantities). So… on Tuesday there’ll be beds to weed, a lawn to nourish, poor Clematis plants to move and lots of tidying. There is also a fibre glass bath to retrieve from the brook. Washed downstream by heavy rains this unsightly bit of flotsam needs dealing with.

How lovely to see the L’Occitane garden win another gold medal this year at the show. It was my favourite garden last year. I wanted to sit amongst those olive trees with all the aromatic underplanting. A manicured garden it was simply not..but oh so beautiful. Talking of L’Occitane I was recently at Stansted airport and going through security on a flight to Perugia. As I came through the security gate I set off the bleepers. I was taken to one side and had my hands swabbed, again I set alarms ringing. Bemused I said to the security officer,”Is this to do with drugs” to which he replied “no, explosives!” Next I witnessed a walkie talkie conversation “we have a female suspect at Gate 12 and need a female operative”. In due course I was taken to a small room where two female officers frisk searched me. It was all very serious until one of them piped up “Is your jumper from Primark?” to which I replied in a rather disgusted tone “No, H&M!” (as if H&M was a high end label) Eventually, I escaped the room and the officers concluded it was my rather lovely L’Occitane hand cream that had set off the alarms. Be warned!

As May hurtles to its sunny conclusion I hope everything is growing beautifully in your garden or window box. Seasons change!

Rocking Dog Loves Manuscript Paper

Italian Food Parcel, Rocking Dog

Italian Food Parcel

Oooooh how I love a good bit of manuscript paper! The true definition of a manuscript is that it is a handwritten piece of work rather than work which is typed or word processed. So, manuscripts could include a handwritten recipe book, love letters, old property deeds, Bob Cratchit style account ledgers, etc…etc..

I was fortunate to find some beautiful manuscript papers on a flea market stall in Perugia. Not being in the least bit proficient in Italian I have no idea what they relate to, but they look quite official. Many have been stamped, I believe that they are Sardinian. The papers are dated 1832 and 1838, and for being nearly 200 years old they are in remarkable condition. In England this is a period when Charles Dickens is writing, Victoria ascends the throne (1837) and Brunel’s steamship SS. Great Western crosses the Atlantic (1838). The delicious bundle cost me a bargainous 15 euro’s and I am going to be very mean about how I use the precious sheets! My first thought was to get some photocopied to use as wrapping paper. The script marries so well with decadent velvet or satin ribbon, a silk flower, ostentatious label … the possibilities are endless!

On Saturday I met with friends for a delicious brunch, laughs and middle aged moans! I wrapped up Italian sponge fingers and good Italian chocolate together with a recipe for tiramisu for the girls. I bandaged the goodies in some
commercially printed manuscript paper strung together with twine. Madagascan vanilla pods embellished the parcels and smelt divine.

Hope you have a lovely week, and that all is not windswept and wet in your part of the world.
