Sorry To See You Go

It was one of those weekends which just sort of organically evolved! On Saturday Andyman was busy piping and then rehearsing ready for the Rockpipes gig on Sunday 24th September. Are you coming? £5 a ticket or £6 on the night. It will be an experience like no other and I can’t believe I am here actually promoting it, because i’m rubbish at marketing myself! Whilst Andyman was blowing his pipes I packaged a batch bake of squidgy brownie, billionaire’s shortbread and sticky apple and pecan gingerbread. It was sent off in different directions for various sweet toothed friends. Some is being eaten on a beautiful stretch of beach in Pembrokeshire.

An impromptu supper came about and unusually I didn’t dally with Yotam! At Christmas we received a subscription for The Spicery and so every month we receive a box containing spice mixes together with a recipe. Voila! supper sorted. This box included all the spices for Tandoori lamb kebabs, samosas and chaat (a chopped salad). This gift is not for someone who wants a curry in half an hour, indeed I think it is for a loved up couple who want to bond in the kitchen for half a day! By the time I got onto make the samosas I was frankly losing the will to live and I think as a result my samosas were decidedly ugly. How i’d love to be one of those hosts who gets everything ready well before time, slides food into the hostess trolly (!) and takes herself off with a G & T for a long soak! The food was delicious so I was told, so it was worth the blood, sweat and tears.

Sunday we headed to Court House Farm Portishead for the monthly artisan market. It was such an idyllic setting for some lovely stalls. I particularly loved Emy Lou Holmes’s stall with cards, prints etc…Grandma Knitting was great too with gorgeous knits using the softest of “wools” including bamboo. Yes little Doug’, Biddy did buy you something for when the weather gets nippier. The farm is truly wonderful with the most lovely outbuildings. I took photographs of our morning spent there but only later realised there was a great greasy thumb print on the lens (possibly the illicit bacon sandwich!), rubbish! I can really recommend a little trip there.

After the glories of other peoples outbuildings we turned our attention to our own. Our shed sadly needed to be dismantled, it was rottoningly unsafe. Over the years the tiled roof had gained a living moss roof with clusters of ferns, bird nests and ivy tendrils. When I build my eco house it will have a living roof. Four tip runs and still more to go we are left with a rather sad space. I visualise it painted and given huge pots of enormous palms and ferns. However…it could always be an alfresco stage for a future Rockpipes gig!

Rocking Dogs weekend in a nutshell. I must just mention Real Live Rocking Dog who was 10 on Sunday. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but we all love him so much. When I have spells of feeling sad he gives me the reason to get out and walk. He gives love and grumpiness unconditionally, costs us a fortune in grooming (much more than my barnet) and rather like a toddler has a habit of coming up to see us at night. Happy 10th Birthday Real Live Rocking Dog we’ll celebrate today with a trip to the vet for your rabies injection and to assess just what we can do about that breath of yours!

Rocking Dog has come out of “Heaven’s Cake” retirement to construct a marital meringue mountain for Molly & Lex (together with scrummy baby Dotti). 100 meringues are baked, some plain and simple, others with a sprinkling of crystallised rose and violet petals. Then of course I love a little bit of bling so there are decadent flakes of 24 carat gold!

Later today I will build the mountain whilst the guests tuck into a marquee cooked dish of paella. The guests will pour out into the gorgeous Clifton garden to see the couple “cut” the sugar rush mountain. By that time it will have been pimped with fairy lights, summer fruits, roses, cow parsley, borage, and other foraged floristry from the Rocking Dog garden. I hope it will look magical.

Wishing the couple (and scrummy baby) a truly wonderful wedding day and an amazing married life together.

Hoping whatever you are doing this weekend there is sunshine and lots of good things around the corner.

Whoosh! It was a week that blew in and blew out! There were opportunities to blow away the cobwebs and to appreciate some crisp winter days. One or two days brought beautiful frosts and clear blue skies. Whilst walking Real Live Rocking Dog early one morning I witnessed two Great spotted woodpeckers in the throes of a merry and noisy courtship dance close to the kennel. It was a real privilege. The same day my late afternoon walk took me to the field behind the kennel. The sky was truly spectacular. For half an hour I marvelled in its changing hues as the sun set. For some reason I started singing Bowie’s Life on Mars?,  very badly i’m quite certain. The cloud formations and colours really were the stuff of amazing Italianate ceiling artists. Glorious. ‘Dog and I walked back in the dark, and for the second time that day I felt nature- privileged.

With the clear nights I really should unbox my new telescope (thank you Andyman), and start fathoming the starry universe. I want to go beyond recognising The Plough and Orion’s Belt!

Whilst the cobwebs have been blown away outside, inside, Christmas stragglers are still surfacing! Stray baubles have been boxed in cosseting paper pulp egg boxes and attic re-entry will be required. I am not overly concerned because a dash of Christmas will be returning to the kennel in February…. don’t ask!

Spring cleaning and reorganisation is being attempted after the crud of Christmas has left. I particularly like my new makeup vessel! I bought a galvanised tin and glass seed propagator from John Lewis (£20 reduced from £40). For years I have had my makeup in a series of makeup bags on my dressing table, all rather juvenile. Now the series of tin pots hold my lippy’s and the like in a very organised fashion. I like thinking outside the box regarding storage, excuse the pun.

Thankfully, the fridge is beginning to gain its composure after the festivities. As ever its the time to try and eat a little more healthily now that the cheese has finally left the building! Sunday lunch was Ottolenghi’s Lamb Shawarma with a chopped salad, raw white cabbage with pickled green chilli’s and harissa pita. Yotam you are truly yum yum! Dessert was mulled poached pears (thank you for the inspiration Sally).

Beautiful summer nights, perfect for gorgeous summer food. It’s been a busy weekend for the Ferguson family with summer parties near Derby, a surprise party in the Rocking Dog garden and finally a lazy Sunday lunch.

I couldn’t resist including photo’s of Sorrel’s baking. A family party led her and Pete to Derby with the most stupendous of celebratory sausage rolls, and the prettiest of meringues, thanks for the recipe Yotam! Sorrel’s sausage rolls are by all accounts legendary, and this one was the piece de resistance with the hosts’ names written in poppy and sesame seeds. The meringues meanwhile were given a sprinkling of pistachio’s, crushed rose petals and gold leaf, very decadent.

Meanwhile in Bristol there was a surprise party afoot. The Rocking Dog garden was commandeered for our lovely neighbour Symon’s 40th. We had about two hours to hurriedly string the garden with bunting and fairy lights, to set up deck chairs, a bar, and to place tea lights. I rediscovered a beautiful old Indian wedding arch in a cupboard last week, and used it to decorate our entrance gates. It is embroidered with beautiful brightly coloured cows, elephants and a host of other creatures and Indian symbols. I’d love to find out more about it.

Symon seemed to have a thoroughly wonderful time, and the evening was positively balmy. Food, live music, happy children and cake will hopefully help to make wonderful memories. One of the guests made a lovely comment saying that the garden was really romantic. Twilight, fairy lights, bunting, soothing music and a generous glass of bubbly obviously took away from the fact that the garden is devilishly weed filled!

The weekend ended with a lazy late lunch in the garden. Skye Gingell’s Chicken salad with roast bread & sour cherries, cheese and summer fruits were followed by coffee and chocolate (in the most divine packaging). Jugs of foaming Pimms and a couple of bottles of Prosecco made the lunch feel very luxuriant and summery.

Indeed this morning’s post is number 300 out of the kennel! I can hardly believe that over 4 months have passed since the 250th milestone blog post. So much has happened in that four months, much of it lovely, including our long awaited trip to Cuba and THE wedding. However, life is incredibly unpredictable. Things have arisen recently that have been so damned heartbreaking and unfair. I never cease to be amazed by the strength fellow human beings find to deal with complex situations, that rallying positive spirit which cajoles others to keep optimistic. It really is working. Therefore, it has been a real privilege to witness such constant love, devotion and care. I am in awe of you all, including all the lovely medical staff.

My 300th post is a food related one, four days of Rocking Dog food.

Thursday evening starts my four day food odyssey. Friends for supper and I shopped and cooked in a three hour time frame. It was a guinea pig meal (i.e… recipes I had stashed but not tried and tested before) We ate Moroccan Salmon baked in foil and served with minted yogurt, pita and a chopped salad. The recipe advocated that the salmon be put foil parcelled on a barbecue, my oven seemed to do the job perfectly adequately. Incidentally have you ever heard the tale of being able to cook a whole salmon in a dishwasher set on a medium programme?! Pudding came in the form of a tart, this time a Coconut, mango and lime tart. I made my own shortcrust pastry using lime zest and juice, but a shop bought pastry would be a perfect shortcut. The meal got the thumbs up, so the recipes got filed in tried and tested!

Friday evening, Meals on Wheels! A meal taken to friends and then enjoyed with them. Another Persian inspired meal. Ottolenghi’s Lamb Shawarma, which involved marinating a leg of lamb in a spicy aromatic rub overnight. Cooked for 4 hours the thickly sliced lamb was accompanied by a chopped salad (tomatoes, diced cucumber, spring onions, lemon juice), and a red cabbage salad (red cabbage, pomegranate, fresh herbs, pomegranate molasses). Pita stuffed with a tomatoey harissa paste, homemade hummus (Ottolenghi’s recipe, naturally) and saffron roasted Charlotte potatoes completed the feast. Pudding was more French than Persian – a tart case filled with creme patisserie and glazed raspberries. As you already know I love Ottolenghi and am particularly fond of his “Jerusalem’ book.

Saturday evening, a party to go to in a lovely garden. A pudding to take…. ah..what shall i do? 8oz Victoria sponge mix. Cakes baked, sponges sliced through. Cakes sprinkled with strong black coffee and Tia Maria and then layered up with grated chocolate and whipped double cream/Mascarpone. Cake cling filmed and refrigerated overnight. Getting dressed up for the party it was given a generous coating of the Mascarpone/cream mixture dusted with cocoa, finely ground coffee, and grated chocolate. Final embellishing was a broken Easter egg and some gold stars. Voila! you will go to the ball!

Sunday evening, three hours of ironing and about the same of gardening I wasn’t keen to spend much time slaving in the kitchen. I rustled up a simple but pretty salad, Red cabbage and gorgonzola salad with blackberry balsamic dressing. It was meant to have viola flowers in the mix, not having any trusty little pansy flowers I picked some dramatic royal blue flowers from the garden. I did give Andyman a health warning not to eat the said flowers as i’d forgotten what the species was! I think the jury’s out on this salad, and I don’t know whether the recipe will make the cut for the Rocking Dog recipe file.

There are some foodie events on the horizon for Rocking Dog this week. Wednesday sees me doing a session for Rangeworthy and Bagstone WI. I am going to be whizzing up some simple savoury and sweet canapés. I am sure these ladies will pass on some of their culinary wizardry and I look forward to meeting them.

Saturday sees me help with judging the food and drink entries at Frenchay Flower Show. Yikes! what a responsibility. I don’t want to be a hunted woman, I know just how competitive these shows get. I hope I won’t have to try anything too disgusting, cloudy wines, eggy quiches and trifle would be nightmare scenario’s. I have obviously come of age, and so it must be the time to don a tweed suit, sensible shoes and a string of pearls….. or perhaps not!

So I guess my 350th post will fall when the leaves are indeed falling. I’m hoping there’ll be lots of corners turned, lots of blazing light at the end of the tunnel for friends, and the ever present wonders of just how amazing and special the people around me are. Thank you x

Food For Friends -Persian Style

Rocking Dog whizzed up an easy to prepare supper for a house guest yesterday evening. Tried and tested, I cooked Yotam Ottolenghi’s Roasted Chicken with Clementines and Arak, serving it with Jewelled Rice. Dessert was an untried recipe so Kelvin was a guinea pig! I chose to make Middle Eastern Tiramisu because it included Persian ingredients, so complemented the main course. Pomegranates, pomegranate molasses, rose water and sumac all featured.

Ideally the chicken, fennel slices and clementine slices should be marinated for a few hours, or indeed overnight. The marinade is made up of wholegrain mustard, olive oil, orange & lemon juices and fennel seeds. It also includes Arak which is an aniseed flavoured drink served throughout the middle east. Arak I did not have, so I used French Pastis, alternatively you could use Pernod or Sambuca. Once the chicken has enjoyed its alcoholic acid bath, all the ingredients are popped onto a baking tray and roasted. Voila the main course is sorted! I served the chicken dish with basmati and wild rice with dill, tarragon, parsley pomegranate seeds and pistachios folded through.

Unlike Italian Tiramisu’s my Middle East version had absolutely no coffee in its make up. A recipe from the Food section of the Saturday Guardian I wanted an excuse to try it out. I did alter my recipe by using Ricciarelli (Lidl) instead of sponge fingers, and replaced creme fraiche with Turkish yogurt. It was delicious.

Interesting food without the labouriousness!

I’m volunteering in a kitchen with a group of Young Carers this evening. There really isn’t a dull moment in their presence!

Rocking Dog has been doing a little bit of this and that…and going nowhere fast! I hate germy long haul flights, and have been laid low with some mild airborne affliction. Multi-tasking has been difficult and I have found myself ineffectively pootling from one project to another like an ant having been sprayed with DDT!

Sunday lunch was a case in point. I couldn’t really decide what to do for friends and family so we ended up with a Lebanese/ British mix up! Lamb Shawarma (whole leg of lamb with an amazing spice rub), chopped salad, roasted cauliflower and hazelnut salad together with tahini dressing and bread came from Yotam Ottolenghi’s “Jerusalem”. The English elements were Delia’s roasties and some sausages. Pudding saw the first of the the Hambrook triangle’s rhubarb. I poached the tender pink strips together with a vanilla pod, water and golden caster sugar in a gentle oven. To accompany it I whizzed up a batch of praline ice cream – sorted! It sort of all worked and I was very proud of myself when I didn’t capitulate to Alex’s hint/request for homemade ice cream for 120 wedding guests! Go Girl!!!

Staying on the subject of weddings, the boys is now getting ever closer. So in between feeding people and nursing my aircraft lurgy I have tried to step right on up to Planet Wedding!

When the happy couple came over on Sunday, they bought with them a list (both mothers I gather had been angling for one!) This list was not dissimilar to one of those manuscripts that ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ unrolls, taking you through from present day folk to those walking about wearing furs and carrying clubs! I fear that the brides mums’ weekend of relaxation in a spa will be a very distant memory when the said list is unravelled this week! Maybe all those to do’s were best left on a smart phone after all Kylie!

So menu planning, sourcing, ordering (yelp!), making ten staff aprons, reviewing a colossal crockery order etc…all clutter my work bench together with all the components for THAT wedding coat ….. GET IT DONE! On a more positive note I have finally finished the Roman Blind which had been festering in my To Do Basket. My Beloved Bernina repair and a holiday interrupted its completion. Today will see me get the blind up, I suspect that it may be more than a little wonky!

A massive thank you to all who came to my Rocking Dog Christmas Sale on Sunday. It was great to see so many of you and thank you to those who came from Wiltshire and Dorset together with those who organised babysitters (feel very honoured)! Truly appreciate your support. Thank you too for those who gave so generously for refreshments, I was able to write out a cheque for £104.50 for “Young Carer’s “. A million thanks.

The house is looking relatively calm after the mayhem of yesterday. Monday dawned with an early start, I was writing Christmas cards at 4 am… I apologise to any card recipients who can’t read my gobbledy gook! Later, I gathered cake together for Andyman’s work colleagues. A little chocolatey thank you never goes amiss.

Dorset Apple Cake, Sour Cherry Amaretti (Ottolenghi), Billionaire’s Shortbread (absolutely none for Donald Trump), Sticky Sloe Gin Rocky Road (based on Nigella’s Rocky Road) and Dark & White Chocolate Brownie (Nigella) made up this cake tray. I could not bring myself to make any mince pies. Having made 16 dozen so far this year, I am getting a bit teeny weeny bit tired of these traditional festive delicacies.

I hope your Christmas preparations are going well. I haven’t written any lists and I feel a bit out of control! One of Andyman’s favourite sayings is ” Fail to plan, plan to fail” but there again it’s not life threatening if we forget to pick up a turkey!

Indeed, some pesky things have escaped! I just couldn’t help myself, I bought one or two new Christmas decorations and couldn’t resist hanging them. Those empty cup hooks along my cookery book shelves proved all too tempting for my haul. Pretty!

When I am reading an interiors feature in a magazine I always love to scrutinise the home owners book shelves/ coffee table. My shelves display a plethora of Jamie O, Nigella, Delia, Ottolenghi and Skye Gyngell books. What I wonder does that say about me? I very rarely send cookery books off to the charity shop so there are remnants of my tentative first steps into culinarydom! That Hamlyn cookery book dating from 1973 started me off on my Pineapple Upside Down Cake odyssey. Sometime very soon a Jamie Oliver tome will be pulled from the shelf for his delicious Beetroot Gravadlax recipe.

Elsewhere in the Rocking Dog Kennel tangled fairy lights from my childhood tumble down Material Mountain. Alas no electrician seems to want to touch them – so unlit they’ll stay. Perhaps i’ll twirl some new lights around them to festoon them with light. I have such memories of my dad every year untangling the glittery chain, twiddling each bulb and exclaiming “God love a duck” when the lights refused to work. Eventually he’d manage to get the lights working. He’d then half heartedly but methodically swathe the tree with the lights before sinking into a chair with a tot of whisky and cigar. Mum and three tired kids would then set to work with boxes of oh so familiar tree ornaments, tinsel, lametta, and net skirted fairies. All the while Jim Reeves would be serenading our frouing.

Spanish Madonna has never gone away. A Christmas gift last year from Andyman, I could not bear to send her into the attic so soon after unwrapping her. In the workroom a jumbled jar of bottlebrush trees, cheery spotted mushrooms and ballerinas await cakes and parcels to adorn. Meanwhile a jar of old fairy light bulbs are hoping to be strung into a nostalgic garland if time allows.

I know, I am totally incorrigible regarding my love of Christmas decorations and you know who!

I can thoroughly recommend the Vin Santo trifle recipe. Taken from “Food For Friends” by Fran Warde the boozy pud’ is a concoction of biscotti, fresh figs, cherries, mascarpone and Vin Santo. Vin Santo (holy wine) is a sweet wine which is enjoyed in Italy often with biscotti for dunking… DELICIOUS! Yotam Ottolenghi has a fantastic biscotti recipe which includes dried sour cherries

A page from Mark Hearld’s Workbook, forms the backdrop for “Blackbird Worship”. Mark designs beautiful books, textiles, wallpapers and cards which depict flora and fauna. I would LOVE to have a sneaky peak into the York home he shares with designer Emily Sutton. He and Emily sell their wares through St Jude’s and Art Angels.

The cherry scarf was a recent buy in Sainsbury’s (Tu) and a great hair tidy up!

I am hoping that in the coming sunny days we will indeed be able to pick cherries. However, some very fat pigeons appear to have their beady eyes on the clumps of scarlet fruit. So much for sweet singing blackbirds!
