Rocking Dog Loves Simple Garden Blooms

Milk Bottle Flowers,Rocking Dog

Milk Bottle Flowers

With the kennel a little more ship-shape I loved bringing some garden flowers through the door yesterday. Just eight stems were required to fill eight simple glass milk bottles (large from Ikea and the small from Ampulla). Phlox, teasel, tansy, sprig of rosemary, borage, evening primrose, crocosmia and one unknown! My simple arrangements were given a spot on a sunny windowsill. Voila! I love flowers plucked from a garden or field. I am a gal of simple tastes!

After flower arranging (hardly!) I then turned my attention to the table close to the sunny window, regrouping ceramic treasures. One or two are contemporary potters seconds others gorgeous gifts. The brown glazed pot is sentimental and loved. It was made by my late mum whilst at teacher training collage in the early 1950’s. A simple coil pot, when I smooth its interior I feel my mums fingers working the clay. There is also a glazed bowl which was so thoughtfully gifted to me by the Holburne Museum, Bath. I used to cater for events there, cooking in their minuscule kitchen. I remember remarking to a member of staff that their slop bowl for used tea bags was just too lovely for that purpose. A year or two went by, no doubt with the bowl seeing its daily fill of tea bag detritus and it was time to do a Heaven’s Cake farewell picnic. The Holburne was closing for a considerable length of time for the building of its dramatic new extension. After a delicious picnic on a lovely sunblessed day the empty hampers came back to me. Within one of the baskets wrapped in white tissue and tied with a bow was the beloved tea bag slop bowl. I was so moved that someone had remembered my jokey comment. I know it’s not every ones cup of tea (!) but I truly love it.

The latest ceramic purchase are two large silvered ceramic lamp bases. I bought them at Redland Fair for a bargainous £20 the pair. They have some age, and had the tiniest round pin plugs. I kept “watching” the prohibitively expensive shades in the hope they’d go into the sale and fortuitously they did. Lamps complete. Thank you to electrician/fisherman Phil for checking their wiring.

Pots jiggled I questioned myself why I hang onto SO much stuff. I keep promising the kids that I am going to become a minimalist, but my minimalist brainwashing therapy hasn’t yet begun!

Originally the table was Andyman’s desk, that was until he’d knocked his shins on the antler base just one too many times. Result! Moved downstairs it now sees various collections of objet d’art throughout the year. Christmas sees it covered in snow, putz houses, vintage baubles etc.. which leads me neatly onto the fact I am sewing some Christmas stockings today! Bah Humbug!

From Pooh fabric to Pooh Christmas Stockings, Rocking Dog has worked her magic! Vintage fabrics, ribbons, buttons and trims have been brought together to make festive hosiery with personality. Finally labels scripted by the Dog have given this latest batch of stockings suitable names.

Maybe i’ll put Christmas to bed for a little while and make and bake things altogether a little more summery.

Have a good week and let’s hope the sun starts shining. Love Rocking Dog x

Rocking Dog Cuts Out Christmas Stockings…Again!

Vintage Loveliness Ready For Sewing, Rocking Dog

Vintage Loveliness Ready For Sewing

Rocking Dog decided to use the stash of fabrics bought at the Vintage Jumble on Saturday. So on my workbench the lovely Pooh fabric has been cut into stocking shapes ready to be sewn. The stockings will have cheery green & white gingham linings and will be embellished with some lovely frou! I have also cut stockings from a bright 60’s print. This little piece of fabric has been stashed on Material Mountain for a long time. A green check tablecloth bought at the jumble will provide the linings. More Marie Antoinette pretty feet boots have been cut, and in due course will be embellished with buckles, French ribbon and bobbles. Perhaps if I leave everything out on my work bench something magical will happen, those little mice in Beatrix Potter’s “The Tailor of Gloucester” will sew and embroider my stockings exquisitely!

Christmas really doesn’t need to be all about green, red and gold. It can be about French toiles, 50’s and 60’s prints, crewelwork and Pooh! I know it’s really early to be sewing such festive wares but shops are like Boy Scouts, they like to be prepared….dib, dib, dib!

No,no,no….. absolutely no Michael!

…..in the lane snow is glistening, a beautiful sight etc.. etc.. Enough of that, it’s just that i’ve been making Christmas stockings.

At times it’s good to seek solitude and contemplation. A little bit of yesterday I shut myself away with Beloved Bernina and a bit of Radio 4 catch up. I was meant to get on with THE wedding coat, but it simply felt too challenging with so many thoughts circulating. Today is another day!

Fabrics were sought on Material Mountain and away I went with some festive sewing. I love mixing pattern with pattern, so chose my main fabrics and then selected check and ticking for linings. As I happily sewed I decided that I wanted to name my stockings, strange but true. The vintage American nursery print really reminded me of the story of Johnny Appleseed, whilst the French Toile de Jouy made me think of Napoleon Bonaparte!

After a succession of traditional stocking shapes I decided to try a heeled boot shaped stocking. I drew out a shape for the boot on a large piece of cardboard, this would serve as a template. Fabric cut in main and lining fabrics I then got sewing! Bobbles, ribbon hanging loop and decorative buckle finished this eccentric little boot. Not bequeathed with the largest of openings this stocking is crying out to be filled with mere trinkets, baubles and jewels, perfect for Marie Antoinette!

No sorry Michael it really isn’t time for you yet!

So, What Does the Weekend Hold For You?…

Special Cake Delivery, Rocking Dog

Special Cake Delivery

So, what does the weekend hold for you? I hope there are some lovely things to enjoy, be it friends to see, good food to eat or a bracing walk to be had.

Rocking Dog’s weekend is a bit of this and that. A large part of this and that will be clearing our cellar. It indeed resembles a sty and needs a good sort. There are paint tins galore, and enough china to stock a small hotel! Unfortunately, unlike my brother’s big clean out last week there will be no Gucci or Hermes handbags to uncover!

Our cellar was used by the previous occupants as an air raid shelter when the Bristol Blitz was underway (1940). Further back in time the cellar was used as a place to hang and store meat. The hooks remain as do the huge stone blocks with drainage channels. I wish I could say we use the space for storing an exquisite selection of wines, but alas not!

When the cobwebs are dusted from us, perhaps there’ll be the opportunity to see what’s going on in St Nicholas Market. There are always lovely things to eat and drink. Aah Toots and Eat a Pitta are favourites. Maybe a stroll around the harbour will follow with Real Live Rocking Dog.

If the weather allows the moss, oops! grass needs mowing and if time allows there’s a lengthy list of things still to organise for the Tipi wedding! I also really do have to get down to making Christmas stockings for a pitch. (No, no, you are not allowed to come out yet Michael much as I love you!)

On Sunday there are races to be run. Andyman is taking part in the Frenchay 10k run, a mightily hilly affair! Meanwhile our boy is doing the London Marathon and raising money for Sarcoma UK (Read why Alex aka Sick Note is running the race on this link). Thank you to all those who have sponsored him, truly appreciated. And…. yes, that is David Beckham with Alex in the photo below! Alex, in the course of his job gets to meet a number of high profile personalities but admitted being quite starstruck meeting DB. Good Luck boys!

Finally, there is indeed a special cake delivery to be made. Two very special people are setting out for new adventures over the channel and cake is such a British way of celebrating absolutely anything. Nigella’s chocolate cherry recipe complete with chocolate ganache is what I chose for the surprise cake. Unlike the icing depiction I’m not aware that the couple are going to be selling onions or life saving anytime soon! Bon Voyage Huw and Selina… happy sunny times we truly wish for you.

Lots to pack in and i’m sure there’ll be many tasks to carry over into another week or weekend…. but we can but hope!

Swimming In Treacle!

Rocking Dog Stockings Hung Up With Care!, Rocking Dog

Rocking Dog Stockings Hung Up With Care!

Things have happened this week which have made me feel as if i’m swimming in treacle. Not nice. So, I thought i’d have a little bit of respite and do a little blog before the weekend begins.

Before things started being very unpleasantly chaotic I managed to complete some Rocking Dog Christmas stockings. Material Mountain has as per usual provided an avalanche of fabrics and trimmings to complete this enjoyable project.

Which stocking is your favourite? I really like the ones which feature fireplaces. The fabric was purchased at one of the wonderful Vintage and Handmade jumbles held at Rangeworthy Village Hall. It is a / 1950/60’s fabric made in France and it’s edge displays the fabric title “Aberdeen”. The French designer seemed to have a very rosy and warm view of this very cold sea ravaged city! I also used a vintage trim bought at the Jumble’, and lined the stockings with a jolly gingham. I found myself singing “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” whilst sewing these retro stockings!

The Scandi stockings are made from a contemporary remnant and linked with the gingham they feel a bit Swedish. Oh such lovely memories of our trip to Stockholm in December 2014. The stockings’ loops are joined by heavy vintage mother of pearl buttons and some litle metal wings (bought in Stockholm).

Alas, there was only enough bunny fabric to make one stocking. An up-cycled charity shop piece I lined it with a jolly spot fabric. I decided some bunny food was needed, so made carrots from felt and synthetic cushion filler.

Voila! Some stockings to be hung up with care this Christmas-time. ( link dedicated to Sorrel x)

Another job completed is the bespoke advent calendar. The numbers are a bit of a mixture this year and many are numeral gift tags bought in Ikea. This calendar is winging its way to someone this weekend. Happy Days!

Whatever you are doing this weekend I hope you have a lovely one. Wrap up warmly it looks as if there is a cold snap on its way! I think i’ll be doing a bit more swimming in treacle….but thankfully life does have a way of sorting itself out. Love Rocking Dog x

Rocking Dog’s Scented Sewing Session

Packed Up & Ready To Go, Rocking Dog

Packed Up & Ready To Go

After two very muddy and blowy dog walks Rocking Dog escaped the elements and took refuge in the sewing room! I finished some stashes of masculine spiced lavender sachets and then got down to the business of sewing some Christmas stockings utilising fabrics found on Material Mountain.

The smell of the Yorkshire lavender was very heady and soporific, however The Archers Omnibus made my blood pressure rise considerably! When is the dreadful manipulative Rob going to be stopped in his tracks?! Grrrrrrrrr!!! I have a feeling it could be a very long and distressing storyline. Andyman makes fun of my love of the radio soap and has a habit of creating all the farm noises…very badly. My dear brother once had to dig out a basement in a New York brownstone to create a sound studio ( I rather think complete with pit filled with gravel to simulate someone walking on a rough pavement). Poor chap needed a back operation soon after this gigantium challenge.

Anyway enough of Rob, Ambridge and Linda Snell’s Calendar Girls my sewing session proved productive. Eight lined stockings await hanging loops and frouing. I think there’ll be some jingle bells to add to the Scandi’ inspired stockings and a felt carrot to adorn the one featuring white rabbits. Watch this space for the finished articles.

Driving back through Bristol earlier this week I was horrified to spot three houses already sporting Christmas decorations. Love Christmas decorations that I do, the thought of six or so weeks with them makes me feel quite nauseous! If I was being a real Victor Meldrew what does all this extra electricity cost to Grinch a house for such an extended period, I presume considerably less than a Cannabis factory!
