Rocking Dog Bunting To Colour In

Bunting Garb', Rocking Dog

Bunting Garb’

Good morning from the Rocking Dog kennel. I hope you have had a sunny and restful weekend. The Dog has been making bunting for some very special little ones. Six pennants of white have been sandwiched by pennants in pretty prints. The hope is that exquisite little drawings and words will adorn the plain white pennants to make jolly wall hangings.

1.I made my bunting by firstly making a template. Taking an A4 sheet of paper I folded it in half and then drew my pennant to the size I wanted. I cut my pennant, unfolded it, and then transferred it to a piece of card. A rotary cutter and metal ruler was used to cut out my final template.

2.I chose fabrics and bias binding from Material Mountain. I selected a white cotton sheet for the plain pennants. Cotton is a really good fabric when using fabric paints, fabric pens or fabric crayons.

3.Use your template to draw out your pennants. Remember if you are using pictorial print make sure you draw out your pennants with the print in the correct direction. The white pennants can be cut out economically by drawing around template with point at top of fabric and the next with point towards bottom and so on.

4.Put your pennants fabric right side to right side and sew the two long sides together. Continue to sew all your pennants.

5.Now turn your pennants right way out. Use a pencil or chopstick to poke out the point. Press all your pennants with a hot iron.

6.Use the hot iron to press your bias binding (you could also use ribbon or fabric tape) in half its whole length.

7.Start by sewing your tape approximately 10cm before adding in your pennants between the folded bias binding. Again leave 10cm at the end (these will be your ties for hanging your bunting)

8. Press, and then get the little artists decorating!

Shortcuts. Use your template to pinking shear single layer pennants, or you could cut paper pennants and glue ribbon to link them together.

I’m hoping to get all artisty this week by getting down to some mosaic in the garden. The best laid plans……

Whatever your week holds I hope it’s a good one.

Summer Nights & Summer Food

Sorrel's Magical Meringues, Rocking Dog

Sorrel’s Magical Meringues

Beautiful summer nights, perfect for gorgeous summer food. It’s been a busy weekend for the Ferguson family with summer parties near Derby, a surprise party in the Rocking Dog garden and finally a lazy Sunday lunch.

I couldn’t resist including photo’s of Sorrel’s baking. A family party led her and Pete to Derby with the most stupendous of celebratory sausage rolls, and the prettiest of meringues, thanks for the recipe Yotam! Sorrel’s sausage rolls are by all accounts legendary, and this one was the piece de resistance with the hosts’ names written in poppy and sesame seeds. The meringues meanwhile were given a sprinkling of pistachio’s, crushed rose petals and gold leaf, very decadent.

Meanwhile in Bristol there was a surprise party afoot. The Rocking Dog garden was commandeered for our lovely neighbour Symon’s 40th. We had about two hours to hurriedly string the garden with bunting and fairy lights, to set up deck chairs, a bar, and to place tea lights. I rediscovered a beautiful old Indian wedding arch in a cupboard last week, and used it to decorate our entrance gates. It is embroidered with beautiful brightly coloured cows, elephants and a host of other creatures and Indian symbols. I’d love to find out more about it.

Symon seemed to have a thoroughly wonderful time, and the evening was positively balmy. Food, live music, happy children and cake will hopefully help to make wonderful memories. One of the guests made a lovely comment saying that the garden was really romantic. Twilight, fairy lights, bunting, soothing music and a generous glass of bubbly obviously took away from the fact that the garden is devilishly weed filled!

The weekend ended with a lazy late lunch in the garden. Skye Gingell’s Chicken salad with roast bread & sour cherries, cheese and summer fruits were followed by coffee and chocolate (in the most divine packaging). Jugs of foaming Pimms and a couple of bottles of Prosecco made the lunch feel very luxuriant and summery.

Lovely friends, lovely family and gorgeous sunshine.

I hope the week starts well for all. Love Rocking Dog x

Everything’s Blooming For Spring Sew Well !

Flower Sprigged Vintage Linen, Rocking Dog

Flower Sprigged Vintage Linen

With the beautiful blue skies and the birds singing it felt very spring like yesterday so Rocking Dog has been getting excited about beautiful blooming florals. Plans are underway to make some lovely new products to herald the beginning of spring.
I will announce some Rocking Dog dates to put in your diary hopefully very soon.

I have some lovely vintage table linen, hand embroidered with an array of spring flowers, chicks and Easter eggs. How I love to see a pile of freshly laundered starched linen, it makes me want to keep it all!

This week sees Rocking Dog making more wedding bunting, made from antique lace. These handmade lovelies are so pretty for decorating a marquee, garden or church doorway. Also ready to be sewn are more vintage lavender stuffed hearts. They would look exquisite hung in numbers from tree branches, or given as unique wedding favours. I am always happy to help wedding couples with bespoke banners, favours, bunting and other decorative loveliness! I love styling weddings and parties, so if you would need a skilled creative pair of hands to help set up, frou and take the pressure off – give me a shout. Please spread the word.

Rocking Dog Sews For Spring

Vintage Lace, Rocking Dog

Vintage Lace

Rocking Dog is beginning to think of projects to embrace the forthcoming spring.
With a gorgeous stash of vintage lace and frou I am looking forward to make pretty things to entice those with beautiful boudoirs or with nuptials to celebrate.

With my son’s recent engagement I have yet to be given my orders regarding what they would like me to “run up”. It’s early days and I hope the lovestruck couple enjoy the planning of their special day. I am sure it will be very unique and meaningful, and maybe I need to sew some lace edged handkerchiefs for the day!

Until then I can make lovely things for other brides and grooms. I am very happy to work with couples and make bespoke decor and additionally can help with wedding styling. How I love frouing!

My advice to anyone planning a wedding is to delegate with a capital D! It is very tempting to try and do everything as a small family group but ….here’s a stark warning! We as a family sourced and did all the food, marquee flowers, setting up, made 1000’s miles bunting, sourced and bought 120 sets vintage china and Babycham glasses, baked and decorated the cake, decorated the chapel, sourced and bought all the booze, did all the wedding stationery, made night lanterns etc….etc..for lovely daughters wedding and …..felt totally wrecked! I had three hours sleep, literally had ten minutes to get ready, and had none of those tender proud parent moments as I was too busy ferreting in the fridge for 120 Panna Cotta’s and the evenings Pieminister pies! Meanwhile, Andyman was still in a towel when the white Cadillac arrived! It was mad! Though in a somewhat trance like state it was a great wedding, but I do wish I’d just been able to let my control freak nature to let go just a little and I think that goes for the bride too and we’d… DELEGATE!

On the very plus side we have some very lovely vintage china in our cellar which we have been able to use for charity events, loan to friends and groups. Rocking Dog hopes to host a charity pop up vintage afternoon tea later this year. Please contact me if you would like me to send you an invite.

Looking forward to finally putting Christmas to bed, with decorations boxed, fridge cleared of naughtiness and thank you letters written. Then I can make lovely Rocking Dog things, and watch for the first signs of spring.
