If You Go Down To The Woods Today…

Reaching To The Sky,Rocking Dog

Reaching To The Sky

Most days walks with Real Live Rocking Dog take me along semi-wild woodland paths which closely hug the River Frome. I love witnessing the change of the seasons and the ever-changing flora and fauna.

Yesterday was mild and I was aware of the wonderful sound of birdsong. Spring really does feel as if it is on its way. There were huge splendiferous rugs of Snowdrops and budding Daffodils, Primroses, Violets and Celandines. In a month or two these wild blooms will be succeeded by carpets of bluebells and wild garlic. Later still there will be drifts of wild Foxgloves, Cow Parsley and Himalayan Balsam

On yesterdays’ walk I loved the towering bare branched trees reaching into the still grey winter skies. Such wonderfully dramatic silhouettes. Soon these giants will be cloaked with verdant lush greenery and provide nesting places for a variety of woodland bird species.

Dry stone walls were covered with impossibly green velvety moss and there were cascades of ferns tumbling down the Pennant stone “cliffs”. Everything really seems to be sparking into life, I just wish the mud would finally subside!

Rocking Dog Huddle tonight 7-9 at the kennel. Look forward to seeing you.

Christmas Has Tumbled Down From The Attic!

Tumbling Out Of The Attic!, Rocking Dog

Tumbling Out Of The Attic!

Yes Indeed, Christmas has tumbled down from the attic! As Andyman passed boxes and bags down from the hatch even I had to say “Houston we have a problem”! Andyman quickly changed the “we” to a “you have a problem”. However, he was kind enough to go onto say that for 50 weeks of the year the hoarding is confined to the attic.

This year we had another attic hatch installed…..handy that! Thankfully, Andyman emerged from Number 3 attic cobwebbed, dusty, remarkably composed and good humoured despite dealing with the seemingly endless haul.

Every year I look forward to unwrapping familiar festive treasures. There are decorations from childhood, travels, ones handmade by family and friends and those charity shop finds. There are decorations with previous life histories- escutcheons which would have graced doors and furniture, chess pieces, and crystal drops from elaborate chandeliers. There is no mitchy- matchy colour scheming or theming, this is all about nostalgia and kitsch!

I met with a friend last night and she somewhat guiltily confessed that she puts up cards from previous years. Kindred spirits we are, for I too have a stash of cards which come out each year. They are a mixture of vintage cards, together with ones that friends and family have designed and made. I recently bought a Christmas Card order book dating from 1961. Contained within the book were actual cards depicting holly gathering bobble hatted children, cutesy dogs, snow scenes and stocking hung fireplaces. The oddest card is one depicting a hammer and wine glass! Maybe i’ll create a 1960’s tableau this year with my cards, putz houses a couple of Babycham glasses, bowls of Twiglets and Cheese Footballs and technicolour tinsel galore!

Over the next few days Grinching will be done, and the house will look at its best. I always think this is a winter loving home.

I hope your preparations for Christmas are going well. Not long to go before the manic scramble for the last sprout begins!

A Wedding, St Andrew’s And Planning For Christmas

Lost Menu, Rocking Dog

Lost Menu

Poor Rocking Dog is feeling decidedly old and dog-eared! Last week was a busy one with my St Andrew’s Day Celebration, and then in very quick succession a lovely wedding to cater for.

Thank you to all those folk who came out on a cold frosty evening to buy, eat and chat last Wednesday. With these colder temperatures it is all too tempting to curl up on the sofa and nestle down for the evening.Thank you for generous donations for Young Carers and BUST, the total will be given after my Winter Wonderland event on Sunday. I would love to see you then, let’s get festive together!

In between events there were neighbours to visit. Plants and eats were enrobed in crisp white tissue and snowy white bags. I don’t always need to do colour!

Sunday was spent washing a Mini full of vintage china. How pretty it all looked laid up on freshly starched vintage table linen. What a gorgeous bride and groom …..but where did they and their 50 ish guests put ALL that tea?! Four litres of milk and sixty tea bags has to be a record! Very frustratingly I left the menu’s at home – so for any guests tuning in this morning I have posted a pic’ of the lost menu! The Rocking Dog team had to work in an absolutely minuscule kitchen, but the tea pots got filled, cakes got laid up on vintage cake stands and the tiramisu’s were embellished with their raspberries! Thanks to Marie, Lara, Holly and Kylie, you were brilliant. I really do think this was my swan song regarding weddings – the stamina required is substantial and drinking Red Bull is unfortunately not the answer!

This week THE decorations will come tumbling down from the attic, and Mission Winter Wonderland will be deployed. Very worryingly it seems such a short time ago that they were being packed up to head into the attic after the festivities of 2015. Frightening.

Have a wonderful week, love a very tired Rocking Dog x

PS. Cranberry Zinger served outside whilst the venue was turned from chapel to tearoom has the following ingredients.
